Hurts Leads Offense in Training Camp

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts delivered his strongest performance of training camp on Monday, the fourth day of practice. This session, held indoors due to heavy morning rain, marked the team’s first day in pads after an off day and a three-practice acclimation period. The offense’s showing on Monday was encouraging, with Hurts demonstrating efficiency and making several impactful passes.

Head coach Nick Sirianni noted his expectation for a “back and forth” between the offense and defense during practice sessions, emphasizing improvement in “little things” and fundamental progressions daily. Monday’s practice was structured as a “review day” for the offense, focusing on concepts previously introduced and drilled, which may have contributed to their improved performance.

During a 7-on-7 period, Hurts threw his first interception of training camp when Quinyon Mitchell intercepted a pass. However, Hurts later connected with Elijah Moore on a deep pass down the middle of the field, a play that stood out as a highlight of the day. Hurts’ celebration after this play was attributed to a “mishap” earlier in practice where Moore ran an incorrect route, leading to Mitchell’s interception. Hurts expressed pride in Moore’s ability to respond and make the subsequent play.

New Offensive Scheme Underway

More than a week into training camp, the new-look offense under first-year coordinator Sean Mannion is in its early stages of installation. Hurts described this period as “calibrating,” as the team integrates new pieces and a fresh philosophical approach to their offense. While the offense had a strong showing against Vic Fangio’s defense on Monday, the defense has generally held the upper hand through the first six days of practice.

The new scheme introduces several adjustments, including Hurts taking more snaps from under center and incorporating wide-zone blocking. Hurts has also kept the ball on more designed quarterback runs, such as a read option during a Wednesday practice where he ran up the left sideline for a gain. Hurts indicated that it is “too soon to answer” how these designed runs fully integrate with the new offense, as installation is still ongoing.

Mannion noted that Hurts asks “thought-provoking questions” and that their collaboration has been a “great partnership.” Hurts is focused on understanding the “why” behind the new scheme and learning each player’s responsibilities, as well as Mannion’s sequencing approach to play-calling.

Player Updates and Absences

Several players were absent or limited during Monday’s practice. Lane Johnson was excused for personal reasons for the second consecutive practice. Rookies Keyshawn James-Newby (ankle), Micah Morris (shoulder), and Jaeden Roberts (calf) were out due to injuries sustained in a previous session. Safety Cole Winsiewski remained sidelined with a hamstring injury, and Cam Williams was limited with a knee contusion.

Jonathan Greenard remains on the PUP list while recovering from a pec strain. First-round pick Makai Lemon exited practice later in the session, with an update on his status expected on Tuesday. In Greenard’s absence, Jalyx Hunt and Nolan Smith were among the edge rushers participating in individual drills. Hunt has been a notable performer in the early camp sessions, while Smith is aiming for a bounce-back season after missing six games last season due to injuries.

Smith addressed reporters for the first time this offseason, apologizing to the organization and his teammates for a May arrest related to driving. He emphasized accountability, stating that such an incident “can’t happen again.”

The team has a walkthrough scheduled for Thursday, which will be closed to media, before resuming regular practices on Friday and Saturday, concluding what is expected to be the busiest practice week of training camp.
